Rider Skills Test (RST)

Next Step Motorcycling Academy strives to meet the needs and expectations of those persons seeking to complete their skills examination and gain their motorcycle endorsement.

Applicants must provide the following:

  • a valid permit and IN drivers license

  • registration and proof of insurance for the motorcycle you are riding

  • you must wear a DOT approved helmet to, from and during the test

  • your motorcycle you are testing on must be in good mechanical working order and street legal

  • We test if it is raining!

The performance standards measured in the RST-2W and RST-3W represent minimal skills needed by novice riders for street riding. These tests have been developed to assist examiners in conducting fair, accurate and objective evaluations of rider performance for licensing or endorsement. In each exercise, the examiner makes objective measurements of an applicant's ability to meet licensing standards.

Neither the RST-2W nor the RST-3W is restricted to any single type, style or size of motorcycle or 3-wheel vehicle. Applicants are responsible for controlling and maneuvering the motorcycle they choose to test on, whether large or small. The examiner's responsibility is to fairly and accurately determine the rider's ability.

The RST-2W or RST-3W will not be performed in hazardous weather, however examiners have experience conducting training in less-than perfect weather.  We test in the rain!

The RST-2W or RST-3W consists of several elements which measure an applicant’s basic control of the motorcycle and response to hazardous situations. The The RST-2W or RST-3W consists of the following actions:

  • Cone weave, Normal Stop

  • Turn from a Stop, Left Hand U-turn

  • Quick stop

  • Obstacle swerve

“Points” will be assessed if the applicant does not properly execute any of the maneuvers listed above. If you are unsuccessful in passing the motorcycle skills test, you must wait until the next day before taking the test again. If you accuumilate three (3)unsuccessful motorcycle skills tests while holding a motorcycle learner’s permit, you must wait two (2) months from the date of the last unsuccessful skills test before taking the motorcycle skills test again.
